Coaches, officials and volunteers scholarship

Aims and objectives of the scholarship?

The aim of the grant is to strategically increase the number of Hampshire & IOW residents qualified to coach, officiate or volunteer in sport and to raise existing standards.

  • Encourage individuals to take the first step into coaching, officiating or volunteering by completing the appropriate governing body’s award scheme
  • Assist the development of existing qualified coaches, officials and volunteers through additional, higher level, awards and courses.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applications are welcomed from governing bodies of sport and local authorities who can demonstrate clear need for either new or higher level voluntary coaches/officials/volunteers and who are residents of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.  Individual members of the public cannot apply.

NB Applications made on behalf of paid professional coaches will not be considered for these scholarships.

How Often can I/we apply?
Each Club or organisation can receive several awards and over several application periods. There is, however, a limit to on the number of awards that can be applied for at one time and these are as follows: -

  • 4 x Level 1's
  • 2 x Level 2's
  • 1x Level 3, 4 and 5

PLEASE NOTE: Exceptional cirmcumstances and innovative projects will be considered.  Please speak to the Coaching Development Offiver before submitting an application on this basis, if you want to support numbers in excess of those outlined above.

When are scholarships awarded?

Application forms are accepted throughout the year, but awards are made quarterly in June, September, December and March.

The application deadlines for the remainder of this financial year are as follows: -

  • September panel - Friday 19th September 2008
  • December panel - Friday 19th December 2008
  • March panel - Friday 20th March 2009

How large is the scholarship?

Awards will be made to off-set the cost of training and examination.  The following condition applies:-

  • Courses must be recognised National Governing Body award
  • Up to a maximum of 75% of the total cost can be funded
  • Up to a maximum of £500 can be awarded per candidate

How to apply?

Contact your Local Authority Sports officer or your sport's National Governing Body officer who will complete a form on behalf of your club.

Applications must be received prior to the start date of the qualification/course.  This programme will not fund retrospective applications e.g. if a course took place two months ago, we will not consider the application as it was received after the course start date.

NB Applications will not be accepted unless it has been completed by, and fully supported by either the governing body of sport or local authority.sports development officer.

Who can be supported?

The scholarship looks to support:

  • Individuals: e.g. a young volunteer who wishes to undertake their level 1 coaching qualification.
  • Clubs: e.g. a club that needs to address a shortage of level 1 and level 2 coaches to enable them to gain accreditation.
